Welcome to Prairie Cardiovascular

Prairie Cardiovascular began as a pioneering organization and continues to pursue that tradition through innovative treatments and extensive research and development programs. Its history dates back to 1979 when James T. Dove, MD, envisioned a greater cardiovascular practice in central and southern Illinois based on the motto “Quality, Compassionate, Personal Care.” The care patients receive at Prairie goes far beyond technical excellence.

Dr. Dove's intention was to deliver state-of-the-art heart care to patients while still providing them compassionate, personal care. He succeeded in establishing that platform of excellence for Prairie. That intention can be seen through the actions of the more than 100 board certified physicians and advanced practice clinicians and more than 40 clinic sites in Illinois.

In line with our commitment to remaining the foremost pioneers of advances in life-saving technologies, Prairie is a national leader in the innovation and development of new diagnostic and treatment procedures.

Dr. James Dove

Our Founder, Dr. James Dove

When Dr. James Dove established Prairie Cardiovascular in 1979, his vision was to extend access to world-class care throughout rural Illinois.

Dr. Dove, an Ohio native, moved here in 1973 to work at Springfield Clinic. He became actively involved with research and development with the goal to deliver state-of-the-art critical medical care to people outside metropolitan areas.

The result is a network of community cardiovascular clinics – a hub and spoke model based on keeping patients with heart and vascular disease close to home – that has grown to include more than 100 cardiologists and advanced practice providers who care for patients in nearly 40 clinic locations throughout central and southern Illinois.

Prior to his death in 2010, Dr. Dove often reminded colleagues, “The past provides us with direction, and the future provides us with opportunity.”

Driven by our history and inspired to honor Dr. Dove’s vision, Prairie Cardiology colleagues value the opportunity to serve the 240,000 patients who trust us with their care each year.

Dr. Dove’s reach extended far beyond Illinois. He served as president of the American College of Cardiologists, which has 39,000 members.

HSHS is aligned with more than 1,000 primary and specialty physicians and advanced practitioners through its owned affiliates HSHS Medical Group and Prairie Cardiovascular and its partnership with Prevea Health.

HSHS continues to advance its mission through its care integration strategy by working closely with physician partners in Illinois and Wisconsin to deliver high quality, patient-centered care.
