GREEN BAY, Wis. – During Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, Prevea Health and HSHS hospitals in Wisconsin emphasize the importance of mammograms and the significant role they play in the early detection of breast cancer.

The American Cancer Society estimates one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer within their lifetime. “Breast cancer remains the most common cancer and the second most common cause of cancer death for women,” says Dr. Kai Huang, Prevea breast surgeon. “There have been many advances in breast cancer treatment over the years that can significantly improve breast cancer survival.”

With regular mammograms, breast cancer is more likely treatable when caught early and mammograms can even detect some forms of pre-cancer before the development of a tumor. All women should talk with their health care provider about the appropriate timing for screening mammograms, especially women at high-risk. A mammogram schedule will be based upon an individual’s health. At age 40, women should have a screening mammogram and continue to have one at least every other year.

Prevea; HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay; HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan; and HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls provide access to mammography services in communities across Northeast Wisconsin.

In the Green Bay area, mammograms are provided at the Prevea Allouez Health Center, Prevea East De Pere Health Center, and at Prevea St. Mary’s Health Center. To schedule a mammogram with Prevea in Green Bay, call (920) 496-4789.

In Sheboygan, mammograms are provided at HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital, located at 3100 Superior Ave. To schedule a mammogram at HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital, call (920) 459-5171.

Together, Prevea Health and HSHS hospitals in Northeast Wisconsin also provide mammograms via a state-of-the-art mobile mammography unit which travels to local businesses and the communities of Appleton/Grand Chute; Kewaunee; Lena; Luxemburg; Manitowoc; Marinette; Mountain; Oconto; Oconto Falls; Plymouth; Seymour; Pulaski; Shawano; Plymouth and Manitowoc on a regular basis. To schedule a mammogram in one of these communities, or to request a business visit, please call (920) 496-4789.

Breast self-exams also play a critical role in early detection of the disease. Using their eyes and hands to determine if there are any changes to the look and feel of their breasts, women can detect potential changes which may be a sign of breast cancer. Changes in breasts are very common, and most are not cancer. However, it’s important to talk to your physician or health care provider if you notice any changes. Finding a lump in your breast can be frightening. Don’t wait to find out what it is. In Green Bay, Prevea offers same or next day appointments with breast surgery experts. Call (920) 272-3350.
