Emergency Services

Providing 24/7 life-saving care, HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital emergency department is staffed by highly trained physicians and nurses and is equipped with advanced technology to deliver rapid diagnosis and treatment. Whether it’s a heart attack, stroke, trauma or other emergent condition, we’re committed to providing high-quality emergency care when you need it.

We are classified as a Level IV trauma center, designated by the Wisconsin Trauma Care System. As a Level IV trauma center, we stabilize and provide advanced trauma care to patients before transferring them to a higher level of care, if needed. The State of Wisconsin inspects Level IV trauma centers every three years to ensure they are providing optimal care.

HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital is part of a system of four high-quality hospitals in Wisconsin, which includes a Level II Trauma Center at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay for those with more specialized health needs. You can trust our highly skilled medical professionals are trained to manage critical and time-sensitive situations. Our emergency team at HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital includes:

  • Emergency physicians – Board-certified doctors specializing in emergency medicine.
  • Emergency nurses – Specially trained in emergency care. 100% of our emergency nursing staff hold certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) as well as successful completion of the Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC).
  • Surgeons and specialists – Available as needed for emergency surgery.
  • Radiology and lab technicians – Provide quick imaging and test results to aid in fast and accurate diagnoses.
  • Respiratory therapists – Essential for managing breathing issues, including those related to asthma, pneumonia or trauma.
  • Social workers and case managers – Help coordinate follow-up care, patient support and resources after discharge.
