HSHS St. Nicolas Hospital's emergency department provides expert care, when you need it most

April 18, 2024

When you need emergency care, HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital and its team of physicians and emergency department staff are ready to provide the right care, right here in Sheboygan.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – As a Level IV trauma care facility, open 24/7, 365-days a year, HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital’s Emergency Department has the health care experts and advanced technology needed to offer high-quality trauma and emergency care. The entire team of emergency nursing staff have obtained advanced cardiac life support certification, trauma nurse core certification and emergency nurse pediatric certification. Courtney Loebel, emergency department nursing manager, says this level of training achieved by the emergency nursing staff helps ensure all patients visiting the emergency department receive the highest level of expert care.

“Our entire nursing team receives specialized training so that we can give all emergency patients the best care possible,” said Loebel. “When a patient comes to us with a traumatic injury, heart related emergency, or if they’re in need of specialized care for an infant or child, we’re well-equipped to offer the care that each of our patients need in a time of emergency.”

In addition to trauma care, the emergency department also has a Certified Primary Stroke Center, which ensures our medical team meets or exceeds Joint Commission quality standards. This specially trained team of stroke experts offer patients immediate access to advanced treatments when time is of the essence.

HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital is the closest emergency department to the Interstate 43 and Highway 23 interchange, much of the Lakeshore community is just minutes away from emergency care. When minutes matter, traveling to the closest hospital can have a significant impact on the health of those seeking immediate medical care. With access to MRI technology, CT scans, nuclear medicine, ultrasound equipment and EEG and ECG technology the specialists at HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital offer advanced diagnostic services.

“The advanced diagnostic and imaging services we provide in our emergency department help our medical team determine quickly what some of the root causes are for our patients’ health,” said Loebel. “When our patient’s need immediate care for a heart problem, stroke or even trauma, we have the resources on hand to determine what’s wrong and in turn get them the care they need.”

With telehealth services available at HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital, emergency care clinical staff also have instant access to highly specialized, board-certified doctors at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay. By remotely connecting patients through a television with two-way audio and visual equipment, stroke and pediatric experts at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital provide immediate examinations and treatment plans for patients and their team of care givers in Sheboygan. When needed, these pediatric intensivists and stroke care experts in Green Bay can also request a patient be transported to HSHS St. Vincent Hospital quickly, for further specialized care. This relationship between the two hospitals helps ensure all patients receive prompt, expert care, leading to better recovery and reduced long-term impacts.
