In an emergency, seconds matter. Ongoing relationships with local EMS teams in the field allow special alert processes for heart attack and stroke to be activated so patients can be seen quickly at our facility. Our emergency department staff includes doctors, nurses and technicians who are specially trained in caring for patients facing life-threatening and other emergency situations. Vituity provides physician management and expertise in providing high-quality care. With leading edge technology at our fingertips, we can process x-rays, CT scans and other diagnostic tests accurately and quickly, allowing faster diagnosis and treatment in a wide range of other areas, including:

Leaders in Heart Care

We are a Certified Chest Pain Center. In 2004, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital became the first hospital in the St. Louis metropolitan area to be designated as an accredited Chest Pain Center from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. This accreditation attests that St. Elizabeth’s meets strict criteria for recognizing and treating patients who come to the emergency room with possible heart attack symptoms. Taking the critical steps to become Accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers shows that St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is committed to the heart health of all members of the communities we serve.

We continue our commitment to quality cardiac care for the region by partnering with world renown cardiovascular specialists at Prairie Cardiovascular Consultants and the Prairie Heart Institute of Illinois.

Emergency Department Approved For Pediatrics (EDAP) certification: Special rooms in the emergency department are already equipped with child appropriate equipment since St. Elizabeth’s had already received Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP) certification in 2014 and was recently re-certified in May 2016. This verifies pediatric protocols are already in place to provide seamless and immediate care from door to nursing staff to physician.

Your Overall Health

One way to maintain your health and prevent non-urgent Emergency Department visits, is to have a primary care physician. Your doctor knows you and your medical history, so you can coordinate the right preventative care treatment and follow-up care when you need it. Select an HSHS Medical Group doctor and get connected to a physician affiliated with St. Elizabeth's Hospital, and our sister facilities in the Southern Illinois region.
