Yassah Lavelah, a Liberian nurse midwife, was actively engaged in a prestigious fellowship at the University of Notre Dame when the Ebola crisis hit West Africa. She was afraid, but determined to get back to her mother in Liberia. Several years ago she co-founded a maternity and health clinic with her mother and now they were working alongside others in the community to fight the deadly Ebola virus. Yassah cut her fellowship short to return to Liberia and assist her mother and community during the catastrophic outbreak.
When Mission Outreach and Notre Dame offered to help Yassah and the people she serves, she was wary and remarked “The craft of empty promises is something we’ve gotten used to in Liberia...it is almost impossible to trust anyone.” However, a forty-foot shipping container filled with personal protective gear, medical supplies, equipment, and food was sent to Liberia. “They did not only send us much needed medical supplies...they have helped restore dignity and belief in humanity to a community that has been abused for so long. It may seem like we are a world apart, but we couldn’t have been closer as a result of the warmth and love that comes with this assistance.”
