Sharma Appointed HSHS Vice President - Chief Risk Officer


HSHS Vice President - Chief Risk OfficerSPRINGFIELD, IL – Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) today announced that Jai Sharma has accepted an invitation to serve as their system vice president - chief risk officer. Sharma will begin at HSHS on Thurs., Feb. 25, 2016. He most recently was the director of institutional risk management at Parkland Health and Hospital System – an integrated teaching hospital system with affiliates, a managed care organization and billions in assets.

As director of institutional risk management at Parkland Health and Hospital System in Dallas, Texas, Sharma was responsible for building and leading risk management for the organization, including the development and administration of claims, risk financing and insurance management, the implementation and administration of the risk management information system, multi-lines of loss prevention, enterprise risk management, and also providing real-time counsel on operational and risk management matters.

“Jai’s extensive risk management, insurance and legal expertise at multiple health care systems will help in the continuous growth of our risk management services,” said Mary Starmann-Harrison, Hospital Sisters Health System President and CEO. “We welcome him to HSHS and look forward to building upon prior success in mitigating health care risk, and identifying and implementing new ways to strengthen operations and patient care.”

Prior to his role as director of institutional risk management at Parkland Health and Hospital System, Sharma was a founder and partner at a healthcare litigation firm representing clinics, physicians and nurses in professional and general liability claims. In addition, he was the assistant vice president of risk management at MedStar Health Inc.in Maryland, and the litigation director of CHRISTUS Health in Texas – a not-for-profit health system consisting of 40 hospitals and health facilities in eight American states and in Mexico.

Sharma graduated with a double Bachelor of Arts in political science and journalism with honors from the University of Houston, and a Juris Doctorate from Tulane Law School in New Orleans. Among other accolades and educational achievements, he is certified in professional healthcare risk management from the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, and has a certificate in negotiation and conflict resolution from Rice University. Sharma was also honored as a “Top Risk Manager” in 2015 by D Magazine and the Risk and Insurance Management Society.
