HSHS, Shelby Memorial Seek to Align Resources

SHELBYVILLE, IL – Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) and Shelby Memorial Hospital (SMH) today announced their pursuit of sharing and aligning resources to continue to improve the patient experience and health care delivery throughout Shelby County. HSHS operates several local health systems in the central Illinois region, and is affiliated with physician groups near SMH.

“HSHS’ 140-year history of steady growth and compassionate care for health populations derives from our ability to work closely with community partners in all ways possible,” said Mary Starmann-Harrison, HSHS president and CEO.

“Over the years SMH and HSHS have worked together to enhance and improve the healthcare for our community. Two of our most recent projects have been the Stat Heart and Stat Stroke programs. These programs over the past five years have saved countless lives of our friends and neighbors. This is why we at SMH are very excited to have this opportunity to continue and expand our longstanding relationship with HSHS. Expanding our relationship will not only allow SMH to enhance and grow our current services but also bring the resources needed to our community to add much needed services for the health and welfare of those we serve,” said Marilyn Sears, SMH President/CEO.

“SMH provides an opportunity for us to share regional knowledge and resources, support their services, identify and serve the needs of patients in Shelby County, and leverage our experienced family of quality care,” added E.J. Kuiper, president and CEO, HSHS Central Illinois Division.

Of the 13 hospitals HSHS operates, St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham and St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur are within 35 miles of SMH, and St. John’s Hospital in Springfield is located less than 60 miles away. HSHS Medical Group – an affiliated physician practice with a large network throughout Illinois– has an office located in Shelbyville.

HSHS and SMH are working closely to identify additional benefits and efficiencies that can be realized with shared resources and knowledge, and to better coordinate the development of services.

“Shelby Memorial Hospital is approaching 100 years of serving the health care needs of Shelby County and its surrounding communities. HSHS is a proven successful provider of health care throughout central Illinois. Our board is excited to investigate how collaboration with HSHS could enhance our ability to not only continue providing quality health care, but to expand health care services available locally. We look forward to our discussions with HSHS as we plan for the next 100 years,” said Michael Kiley, SMH Board Chair.
