Ongoing Education and Development


Annual competencies

Done monthly in huddle staff meetings, in-services, and at the bedside.  
BLS, ACLS, TNCC, Critical Care I & II, EKG and PALS at St. Elizabeth's or one of our sister facilities for nurses to gain additional knowledge and obtain certifications at no cost to the colleague.
  • BLS-Basic Life Support recommended for all patient care colleagues.
  • ACLS-Advanced Cardiac Life Support is offered for colleagues in areas where this level of care may be required.
  • Critical Care Core I - Advanced education for nurses caring for patients with acute coronary syndrome, ST segment elevated myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure and sepsis.
  • Critical Care Core II-Advanced education for nurses caring for patients with stroke, open heart surgery and intubated patients.
  • EKG-A great preparation for colleagues taking ACLS.
  • PALS-Pediatric Advanced Life Support for our nurses taking care of our pediatric population.

Infection Prevention Champion

Each department will have an infection prevention champion.
  • Purpose: To provide our patients with committed, additional scrutiny decreasing their likelihood of developing a hospital acquired infection.
  • Goal: The inpatient units will have a nurse infection prevention champion on all shifts. The infection prevention champion will: attend the monthly infection prevention committee meeting and share any educational updates. He or she will perform monthly hand hygiene audits and submit results to the infection prevention manager. The infection prevention champion will present unit data on hospital acquired infections, hand hygiene compliance and isolation compliance at monthly staff meetings.
  • Training includes classes with our infection prevention nurse.

Wound Care Champion

Each department will have a wound care champion
  • Purpose: To provide our patients with the appropriate education, support and healing opportunities and to provide staff with additional resources for optimal wound care.
  • Goal: The inpatient units will have a nurse wound champion available on all shifts. The wound champion will: be the unit resource for wound care concerns, assist with troubleshooting ostomy issues and assist with wound vacuum application. He or she will complete monthly wound prevalence data and audits, and share this information, along with education updates at monthly staff meetings. Wound champions will insure unit competencies in following skin integrity policies and protocols by implementing proper bed usage to decrease the incidence of pressure ulcers.

  • After training, the wound champions will receive recourse numbers to reach out to vendors with any questions or issues.

Tuition Reimbursement/Partnership with schools/Specialty Certification Scholarship

SEB is proud to offer a variety of programs assisting nursing colleagues to further their professional development
  • Tuition reimbursement – Colleagues employed for 6 months who complete coursework at an accredited program are eligible to receive up to $3000 tuition reimbursement annually
  • Partnership with schools SEB is committed to helping nurses through lifelong learning. SEB is proud to support affiliation agreements with local nursing programs including McKendree and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as well as Southwestern Illinois College of Belleville. Eligible colleagues are eligible for discounts up to 20% off tuition rates.
  • Certification Scholarship – SEB strongly encourages our nurses to obtain certification in a variety of specialties such as CNOR or CMSRN. We recognize our certified nurses on an annual basis. The education department provides resources of information about certification opportunities.
